# What is a personal AI agent? A practical guide

> A personal AI agent does tasks for you instead of only answering questions. What it is, how it differs from a chatbot, what to look for and how to stay safe.

A personal AI agent is software that takes actions on your behalf: it books the table, fills in the form, sends the follow-up and reminds you on Friday. A chatbot tells you how to do something. An agent does it, using your accounts and tools, and reports back.

## Chatbot, assistant, agent

- **A chatbot** answers questions in a conversation. It knows what it was trained on and what you paste in, and its output is text.
- **A voice or digital assistant** handles short commands inside one ecosystem, such as setting a timer or playing music.
- **An AI agent** plans and carries out multi-step tasks across real services. It can use a web browser, your email and calendar, and your task list, and it remembers context between requests.

## What a good personal agent can do

1. **Run errands on websites.** Many tasks only exist as a website with a form. A capable agent can operate a browser to complete them.
2. **Work with your email and calendar.** Find a free slot, book it, draft and send the follow-up.
3. **Keep track of work.** Turn requests into tasks with owners and dates, and show them somewhere you can review.
4. **Remember you.** Your address, preferences and important dates, so you never repeat yourself.
5. **Act on a schedule.** A morning summary or a weekly review that arrives without being asked.

## What to look for when choosing one

- **Where you talk to it.** An agent is only useful if it is within reach when the task occurs to you. Text messaging is the most universal option.
- **Approvals you control.** Payments, messages to new people and deletions should wait for your yes, enforced by the system rather than by the model’s judgment.
- **How secrets are handled.** Passwords and cards should be encrypted and filled in without the model ever seeing them.
- **A place to see the work.** A chat thread is a poor record. Look for a workspace that shows every task and action.
- **Readable memory.** You should be able to see, edit and delete what the agent remembers.
- **Model choice.** Different models are better at different jobs. Being able to choose helps quality and cost.

## Staying safe

Treat an agent like a capable new assistant. Give it access to what it needs, keep approvals on for anything costly or irreversible, and review the first few results closely. Agents can make mistakes, and web pages can contain instructions meant to mislead them, which is why approvals that live outside the model matter. We explain the idea in [Why approvals belong outside the model](/blog/approvals-outside-the-model).

## Where LVLZ fits

LVLZ is a personal AI agent you text on iMessage. You name it, ask for what you need and approve anything that costs money or reaches someone new. Everything it does appears in your workspace at app.lvlz.ai. See [what it can do](/features) or [start a free trial](https://app.lvlz.ai/signup).
